The Hats and Underdown at The Fleece

Caught The Hats last night being supported by local stalwarts Underdown. Solid performances all round even if there was a Nadine Gingell shaped hole in the Hats, sadly.

Oh FFS, dismissing Perl. Again?

OK, so I'm sat at a Perl conference with some of the smartest programmers out there, working for some serious companies doing enterprise level code with great software engineering practices and this clueless mouthpiece dimisses it alongside ISAPI.

WTF?

And his system depends on one smart programmer who wrote the compiler? Hahaha. Good luck.

Fortune Drive, Video Shoot

Fortune Drive, Video Shoot
Originally uploaded by davehodg.
So Thursday was a bit mad. A video shoot? In the Old Duke? With forty or so cidered up Duke regulars and FD fans?

I didn't even know Asda did smart price vodka and Budgens must have been cleaned out of Strongbow.

Still, it all seemed to go well and I took lots of pictures!

Sorting Pictures

So I've taken nearly 20,000 pictures in the last two years. I've also tended to carry around with me around a hundred or so of the best of my recent shots just to show folks who are interested.

Today however, I decided to buy an album to put some of "the best" in. Interesting exercise. What's "best"? How to tessilate three 6x4's so they look nice? Will that sticky stuff really work and can I get the air bubbles out? Does it matter if they're just a little bit wonky?

Still, nicely tactile and book-like. And if I may say so myself, very nice pictures.

Good times :)
Oracle XE

Easiest database install I've done in a *very* long time. Download, install the RPM's, tell it what port and the SYSTEM password and all done.

Sure it's limited: one CPU and 4G of Data.

It's going to give Sybase a run for its money. And I'm a Sybase bigot.

Then, the mighty Counterfeits from, um, the Fleece:

On to First Element from, guess where? You got it, the Fleece:

If anyone in Bristolland has a contact for them, please put me in touch, I want to shoot them somewhere with slightly less crappy light!

And Final Lee (as they say down here), the pinnacle, the mighty, the awesome, the totally delicious Fortune Drive from Mr Wolf's. Billed as "an acoustic set". Like hell!

It was in aid of Cherry D, a local charity for local people.

So give 'em your fookin' money!

That's all. Looking forward to the Harbourside today!

Fortune Drive, Ashton Court

Fortune Drive, Ashton Court

Sunday was a curate's egg.

I hadn't heard whether I'd actually got a photo pass for the weekend, but whatever, there was no way I was missing Fortune Drive. After negotiating and finding out that I did actually have a pass (eventually) I made it to the stage as the guys were into their first song.

Oh, and some smartass jobsworth greeted me at the backstage gap in the fence with: "you're late". No shit Sherlock. I'm out of breath, bathed in sweat. *duh*

Anyhow, the guys were really up for it and the crowd was GREAT.

About two thirds of the way through they lost power. Mark manfully kept bashing the drums for a VERY extended drum solo, complete with beer topup (no pic, I was laughing too hard, sorry!). They got back into the groove only to have the power pulled, with no 5 minute warning, halfway through the penultimate song.

I've not heard an audience boo and jeer "The Man" so hard before. Such a shame. And why? With an hour's changeover too. For an old rock band no-one remembers.

Aston Court's loss is Bristol Harbourside's gain.

Sony Ericsson k800i

Doesn't seem to be much out there about this wonderous little gadget, so hopfully this will get some gogglejuice and I'll get the answers to my questions as well as be useful to other folks!

First up, This is how to get it working with iSync. Great stuff and essential.

It's nice to have a reasonably decent camera even if it suffers horribly from jpeg jaggies. Maybe I'm just hooked on RAW these days?

The music player is great and I've ordered the 1G memory card from Moby Memory.

As supplied by my Voadafone pimp internet from the phone JFW. Gmail on the run! w00t!

So, dear lazyweb, how do I get internet on my Mac? Plugging the USB in gives me eth2 and a 10. IP address but no outgoing connectivity. What am I missing?

Ta!

Single issue politics - I now have my issue

Over the years, I've been both un- and dis- interested in politics. They were all as bad as each other. Even in the days of Tory sleaze, at least the revelations were amusing. However, this lot take the biscuit. From the massive plundering of our pensions to the current attack on basic freedoms and the resistance to an inquiry into 7/7 so that we can at least KNOW what happened, they have shown themselves to be the most morally bankrupt government in a long time.

However, there is *one* issue, above all else, which is seemingly irrelevant but is such a blatant injustice and which could so easily remedied. That issue? The West Lothian Question. Why are Scottish MPs allowed to vote on subjects over which their own parliament has jurisdiction in their own country? Indeed, they have tipped the balance on issues such as university top-up fees that they voted down in Scotland!

Major injustice, easy fix. Whoever promises to fix this has my vote.

Four gigs in four nights!

Fortune Drive twice, Grand Rose Band twice, The Counterfeits, Snatch 22, the lovely Pete Roe twice, debauchery in a field...

You don't *really* want to see the evidence, do you? If I get enough messages, maybe, just maybe, I'll put some up...

Pirates of the Caribbean in on word: Tentacoo!

That's all.

Monsters of Rock 2006

Well that was a curate's egg. Arriving what I though was stupidly
early, Roadstar (Hurricane Party) and Ted Nugent had already been
and gone. Then Queensryche, Thunder, Journey and Alice Cooper
all stomped through thoroughly competent, crowd-pleasing sets,
albeit translating "MoR" as "middle of the Road". Daniel,
you'd have loved it.

Ah, the crowd.

The MK Bowl happily hold 50-60 thousand. Something went badly wrong
with this one. Was it having Download next week the problem? Or that it
clashed with an important 6-0 victory in the football, the Espom
derby, the cricket and an unseasonably for June, lovely sunny day?

At a rough guess, and using rammed sports halls in Germany as a
comparison, I'd say there were no more than 15-20 thousand people
there and a goodly proportion of those were up on the bowl enjoying
the sun, so getting close to the front wasn't exactly difficult.

As for Purple: immaculate and professional as usual. Yes, Gillan was
straining for some of the notes and yes, it was a crowd-pleasing festival
set list, but there were enough quirks to keep it interesting.

Oh, and the sound, at least within the caravan-circle of burger vans
in the main area, was the best I've ever heard in that size of field.
The lack of delay towers made it a bit subject to wind direction up on
the outer banks, but hey, what do you expect! And it was nice to hear Don
cutting through for once.

On the macro-economic level, I think there's a fundamental shift in the
economics of touring going on in the UK. There are so many bands now
catering to every corner of music, and kids are able to get up close
to their favourite bands in a local club for a fiver. So it takes Road
Runner to put ALL their bands on three stages at the same time plus a
few gnarly headliners to pack >100,000 into a muddy field in the
Midlands. Blame Myspace for democratising music?

Pics to follow, dunno how they'll turn out: new lens :)

Weird iBook problem

Grace's iBook just had a spazz with most things, Finder included, not working. It looks like something got corrupted in an update. Looking in the crashdump led me to rsync this directory:

/System/Library/Frameworks/Accelerate.framework/Versions/A/

from my Powerbook. And all is good again.

Very, very weird though.
