Don't lie to your customers.
It's telling that this should even be worthy of a blog but it happens far too often.

Chthonic in the Total Rock Studios
I was privileged to get to hang with Taiwanese black metal superstars in the Total Rock studios last night while they broadcast a two hour marathon of metal mayhem.
Their first European festival of 2007 is booked. I'm there!

Comet watching on Primrose Hill
Went up to the top of Primrose Hill to watch the comet. Just about caught it before it dipped behind the cloud. Definitely worth the hike!

Cavalare, Inn on the Green
This was a GREAT gig. It didn't matter that this was their first with this lineup nor that it was a sterile community centre with a scattering of people and a dog on a string. The guys totally kicked out teh RAWK! If you're in Camden next week, you MUST see them!

Deep linking to images in other people's sites considered harmful. More ass, but of a different kind.
Apropos nothing, I wish flickr gave a bit more information about images. I've got a few with a few thousand views and I'd love to know where the hits came from.

The anti-theists are revolting
Today has seen a little flurry of anti-religious links being thrown my way. Enjoy!
Some rather excellent ad hominem from the Huffington Post. Ass clowns indeed.
MJD on the nutters.
Polly Toynbee on the religious homophobes.
And a bonus shark, frickin' laser beams optional

MY wish for 2007
A simple one this: let's have a sensible policy for photography on the tube and railway network in London and make sure the staff are EDUCATED in this policy. It's the lifeblood of the city and to be constantly in fear of being pounced on by a jobsworth, or worse, the police, ignorant of the rules is a shame. Much of London's history, arhichitecture and life will go unrecorded.

Happy Christmas!
Happy Christmas
Hi all. Happy Christmas! Nearly the end of the year, and what a year 2006 been. As far as I can tell I've shot something like 75 performances in 52 gigs. Ish. That includes the mighty, sweet, lovely Fortune Drive 13 times! And who I was lucky enough to go on the road with in Germany. There exists ONE book of tour photos from that expedition!
Last year, I picked a dozen shots that summed up 2005. This year you get a baker's dozen pics, many of which have never been seen before, of Bobby Anderson from the FD's.
Christmas Cards
The path to hell is paved with good intentions. There are a few people who religiously (geddit?) send me Christmas cards and I have some hand-made cards almost ready to post to them. Apart from the making part. So this will have to do. I love you guys and I'll make it up to you in beer next year.
The Move
The reason why I've been so crap? I've moved to London. Camden, more specifically. Even more specifically here. Not the middle of the road, just down a bit. It's lovely. Come visit. I have a sofa bed.
The day job
I'm now working for Venda, a lovely little e-commerce systems company in Covent Garden doing the usual perl hackery!
Existing Photos - For bands
Whilst packing for the move, I've collected together a massive pile of 6x4 prints of various bands: Blackbud, Fortune Drive, The Hats, The Counterfeits, Nadine, The Cuban Heels and many, many more. If you're in one of these bands and want first dibs, yell and we'll come to an arrangement. Basically, anyone I've shot this year, there's probably a pile of prints. Go on, your mums will love you.
Photo Sales
Which brings me on to the subject of print sales. If you're an individual and would like a print of any of my pictures let me know and we'll work out a price for a 12"x8". A small fraction are on my flickr pages.
Future Sessions
Lastly, the new work. I'll cover any gig in the London area for the usual deal: AAA pass (trust me, it's worth it for the different angles possible) in return for some shots for web use. Magazines, just mail/call me - I'm within 10 minutes walk of at least 15 venues.
For bands and artists, the possibilities for promotional shoots in Camden and London are endless. From simple groups shots in my flat, to location shots on and in the poshness of Primrose Hill to the underbelly of the markets. All for the usual reasonable hourly rate. And all you bands who have been waiting - now is the time!
I can also do the moody portrait thing on demand too!
Whatever - mail me!

Bought any good books lately?
Well, yes actually. Following on from my yak-shaving of this week, I got fully immersed in turning my little script into a full blown module. Come 2AM, I have a Conway-style module, tests, test coverage (100% function coverage, 95% statement coverage etc. etc.), and having perlcritic give it the once-over. Sadly, I'd failed to include the code that Actually Did Stuff.
Oh well.
But! On the book front, I now have "Perl Best Practices" so I can look up where perlcritic thinks I'm being a cardi-wearing, pipe smoking dad on the style front. I have writing Perl Modules for CPAN so now there's no excuse not to. And finally Perl Testing A Developer's Notebook so again, no excuse not to.
Plenty to be going on with there I think.

The Counterfeits and Bearknuckles, Fleece, Oxjam
A very passable evening wherein two of the bands I've done sessions for were playing in aid of the Oxjam charity. Not a bad turnout and the lighting was good for a change.
Worthy of a mention too were Underdown, on the point of a name change to something Top Secret and The Termites who destroyed their setup afterwards in frustration at the monitor setup. Now, now :)

Today, I shaved a yak.
It all started so honourably. I thought: "I know, I'll take my piddly little script to slurp my Amazon Marketplace listings and create a slightly prettier version and bundle it up and put it on CPAN.
Right, so if I'm doing CPAN, I really ought to have an svn repository to put it in.
Which means I really ought to give the wifi card on the linux box a static IP address so I can get at it from outside.
After much (hours) of dicking around, neither the 802.11b OR the 10-baseT card work. lspci says they're there, ifup doesn't.
I've been meaning to upgrade the poky 10-baseT card for a long time anyhow (a month to rsync 300G of data?!!!) so off to the dreaded PC World, dropped £8 on a Realtek (PC Line) branded 10/100 card and now I have blinkenlights!
So my rather naked yak at least has stubble.

James Hurst - Who Made the Law?
Ok all you singer songwriters and everyone else out there, check this out from the lovely James Hurst. Do it now. Or else.

Fortune Drive, The Croft, Oxjam
A hiatus after a brief stint on the road with the mighty Fortune Drive, back in the photography saddle again with...you guessed it, Fortune Drive! And very good it was too.

"Brown M&M's"
From Wikipedia:
"The hard rock band Van Halen's now infamous contract rider called for, among other things, a bowl of M&M's backstage, but with provision that all the brown candies must be removed. In one rumored incident, someone had not removed the brown M&M's, and David Lee Roth trashed the dressing room. The M&M's provision was included in Van Halen's contracts not because the band disliked the candy, but because it served a practical purpose: if brown M&Ms were found backstage, then it was probable that other much more important technical aspects of the rider had also not been fulfilled properly."
So there you go.

Richard Riley
Musician, part of the Saturday afternoon drinking posse.
He caught me standing on a bench in Union Street taking shots of the passers by. So I took a picture of him instead.
