Bought any good books lately?

Well, yes actually. Following on from my yak-shaving of this week, I got fully immersed in turning my little script into a full blown module. Come 2AM, I have a Conway-style module, tests, test coverage (100% function coverage, 95% statement coverage etc. etc.), and having perlcritic give it the once-over. Sadly, I'd failed to include the code that Actually Did Stuff.

Oh well.

But! On the book front, I now have "Perl Best Practices" so I can look up where perlcritic thinks I'm being a cardi-wearing, pipe smoking dad on the style front. I have writing Perl Modules for CPAN so now there's no excuse not to. And finally Perl Testing A Developer's Notebook so again, no excuse not to.

Plenty to be going on with there I think.

The Counterfeits and Bearknuckles, Fleece, Oxjam

Bearknuckles, Fleece, Oxjam

A very passable evening wherein two of the bands I've done sessions for were playing in aid of the Oxjam charity. Not a bad turnout and the lighting was good for a change.

Worthy of a mention too were Underdown, on the point of a name change to something Top Secret and The Termites who destroyed their setup afterwards in frustration at the monitor setup. Now, now :)

Today, I shaved a yak.

It all started so honourably. I thought: "I know, I'll take my piddly little script to slurp my Amazon Marketplace listings and create a slightly prettier version and bundle it up and put it on CPAN.

Right, so if I'm doing CPAN, I really ought to have an svn repository to put it in.

Which means I really ought to give the wifi card on the linux box a static IP address so I can get at it from outside.

After much (hours) of dicking around, neither the 802.11b OR the 10-baseT card work. lspci says they're there, ifup doesn't.

I've been meaning to upgrade the poky 10-baseT card for a long time anyhow (a month to rsync 300G of data?!!!) so off to the dreaded PC World, dropped £8 on a Realtek (PC Line) branded 10/100 card and now I have blinkenlights!

So my rather naked yak at least has stubble.

"Brown M&M's"

From Wikipedia:

"The hard rock band Van Halen's now infamous contract rider called for, among other things, a bowl of M&M's backstage, but with provision that all the brown candies must be removed. In one rumored incident, someone had not removed the brown M&M's, and David Lee Roth trashed the dressing room. The M&M's provision was included in Van Halen's contracts not because the band disliked the candy, but because it served a practical purpose: if brown M&Ms were found backstage, then it was probable that other much more important technical aspects of the rider had also not been fulfilled properly."

So there you go.
